Diagnostic Imaging
Our ambulatory team are equipped with a range of portable diagnostic equipment. This includes:
Ultrasonography
Our ambulatory vets can perform ultrasound examinations at your yard, providing diagnostic information quickly and efficiently.
Ultrasonography uses sound waves to create detailed images of the soft tissues and bony structures. It is a valuable tool for assessing:
- The musculoskeletal system (tendons, ligaments, joints, muscles and bones)
- The abdomen in cases of colic
- The chest
- The reproductive system, for example to evaluate timing of insemination or for pregnancy diagnosis
Radiography
Radiography is particularly useful at assessing the bony structures and joints of the horse and is highly sensitive at detecting changes in bony mineralisation. Multiple portable digital radiography kits enable us to see images in real-time on yard.
Endoscopy
An endoscope comprises a long, thin camera. This allows visualisation of areas that we can’t usually see, for example:
- Evaluation of the throat in horses that ‘make a noise’ during exercise
- Investigation of airway disease, enabling collecting of samples of mucus and secretions from within the windpipe and lungs
- Identification of gastric ulcers
In addition to traditional static endoscopy, we are also able to carry out ‘overground endoscopy’. This uses a special endoscope which attaches to the horse’s bridle and records an image, allowing assessment of the horse’s throat during exercise.
