Gastroscopy & Endoscopy

Multiple flexible endoscopes are available to us in order to visualise structures such as:

• Upper and lower airways
• Stomach
• Sinuses
• Bladder

Gastroscopy and endoscopy is essential for diagnosis and monitoring during treatment of conditions of such as:

• Gastric ulcers
• Recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (laryngeal paralysis)
• Strangles

The video-linked scopes enable us and yourselves to visualise the procedure and diagnostic process.

We also offer overground/dynamic endoscopy which evaluates the upper airways during exercise and at a gallop. Subtle abnormalities in the upper airways which may not have been identified at rest may therefore be diagnosed and treated accordingly.

Overground endoscopy  

Overground Endoscopy provides accurate information on the function of the upper airway at exercise. Our system is lightweight and halter mounted. The upper airway is visualised while the horse is galloping and then reviewed digitally by either Tom or Alex.

Overground endoscopy may be carried out at the Valley Equine Hospital using the gallop adjacent to the practice or at a gallop of the trainers/clients choosing. Additionally, it can also be performed in sports horses/ leisure horses on our brand-new, purpose-built arena at the hospital.
